WHO WE ARE
The Haven is based on the idea of simplicity in Jesus Christ. Jesus said “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:25-30). We want to create an environment that is safe to do so. “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8)
It isn’t a church that is watered down in theology. The Haven is Biblical first and foremost and Jesus Christ is the center of that theology. We believe that Christ is found in a person, not in a program. We also believe that the church is found in the people and not in the building. Therefore, four walls do not define who we are, Jesus Christ does. “Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all” (Colossians 3:11).
The Haven is a simple church on a mission to love God, grow together, and change the world through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
OUR VISION AND MISSION
Our vision, mission and values are one and the same.
The Haven is a simple church on a mission to
Love God, Grow Together, and Change the World.
“And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that (Jesus) answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” – Mark 12:28-30
Thank God for His grace! How do we love God with everything that we are? It is a lot easier said than done, yet it is the greatest commandment of God. The truth is He alone deserves it. After all He is the One who created us. He is the One who offers us a restored relationship with Him and eternal life through His son Jesus Christ. He is worthy of all of our devotion. Again thank God for His grace through Jesus Christ because I have failed to meet the mark.
At the Haven, we want to allow you the opportunity to experience God and see just how good He is. We don’t expect perfection, rather we strive to create an environment that is safe to grow in your love for your Creator.
(The Christians) devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. – Acts 2:42
“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…” – Romans 12:4-6
At the Haven we love theology (the study of God), but we do not pretend to have everything figured out. We realize that in a lot of ways we are still a mess. We are a group of people from all walks of life, but a common bond in our Lord and Savior. Therefore we purpose to be a safe place to question, seek and find the truth and abundant life that comes through Jesus Christ. We do this through weekly small groups that meet in a home environment to encourage and strengthen one another through fellowship, prayer and study of the God’s Word.
Change The World.
“And (Jesus) said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” – Mark 16:15
(Jesus said to the righteous) “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” – Matthew 25:35-36
We want you to find your purpose in God’s world. God has put us all here for a reason. Instead of leaving us to blindly walking around looking for that grand purpose, God gave us our purpose in the Bible through the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. The Great Commandment was given by Jesus and can be found in Matthew 22:35–40, Mark 12:28–34, and Luke 10:25–28. In short, it is love God and love people. This is first and foremost how we bring glory to God and find our purpose.
Jesus also gave us an outlet to loving people through the Great Commission. This can be found in Matthew 28:16–20, Mark 16:14–18, Luke 24:44–49, Acts 1:4–8, and John 20:19–23. It is the commission to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world, beginning with our local community. God has empowered each of us with gifts and talents to carry out that purpose.
At the Haven we want to create an environment where you can discover your purpose and get plugged in to ministry (2 Corinthians 5:18-20; 1 Peter 2:9). We envision ministry not just being done by the church leadership, but the church body as a whole.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
At The Haven Community Church we agree with Augustine’s statement concerning doctrine and beliefs: “In the essentials, unity; in the non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” We are far from a church that is watered down in theology, however when it comes to unity, we focus our attention on the core beliefs that all Christians hold in common. These are the main and plain things that are taught in Scripture and are essential to the Christian faith. Other non-essential issues are important, but are issues on which we should not divide.
These are what we consider the essentials:
BIBLE – We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that it is authoritative in all matters of faith, doctrine and practice.
GOD – We believe in one God who exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
GOD THE FATHER – We believe in God the Father who is the creator of all things; an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, justice, wisdom, power, sovereignty and love. He concerns himself mercifully in the affairs of men and women, hears and answers prayer, and saves from sin and death all who come to him through Jesus Christ.
JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD – We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the basis of His shed blood. We believe in the deity, virgin birth, substitutional death, burial, and physical resurrection of Jesus Christ; in His ascension into heaven, and His present life there for us as High Priest and Advocate. We believe that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will personally and physically return and set up His Kingdom in it’s fullness where He will rule and reign in righteousness.
THE HOLY SPIRIT – We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from God to convince the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, comfort and empower those who believe in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit functions as the life of Christ in the believer.
MAN – We believe that man was created in the image of God and that he fell through sin. As a consequence of his sin, he has suffered not only physical death but spiritual death, becoming dead in trespasses and sin. We also believe that this spiritual death has been passed on to the entire human race, Christ Jesus alone being the exception.
SALVATION – We believe that salvation is by God’s grace through faith alone in His Son Jesus Christ alone. We believe that all who place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord are born again by the Holy Spirit and thus become children of God. Salvation involves redemption, regeneration, sanctification, and glorification. Salvation is by faith and not by works of the law or good deeds, however God has created the Christian to live a life of good works.
THE SECOND COMING – We believe in the literal, visible, personal return of Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the just to enjoy eternal fellowship with God in his kingdom, and the unjust to eternal separation from God in hell.
